What is a South Carolina SR22?

An SR22 may be required in the State of South Carolina due to a number of reasons. Some of these reasons are as follows:

1. You were convicted of Driving Under the Influence (DUI)
2. You were convicted of operating a motor vehicle on a suspended license
3. You were uninsured and operating a motor vehicle

An SR22 is a certification of proof of Financial Responsibility. While it isn't in itself insurance, it's proof that you purchased liability insurance. Under normal circumstances you must maintain your SR22 policy for a period of 3 years from your date of conviction.

What are the Limits Needed on a South Carolina SR22?

The minimum amount of insurance necessary to satisfy the SR22 requirements are 25/50/25. This is broken down as:

1. $25,000 for bodily injury or death to a single person in any one given accident.
2. $50,000 for bodily injury or death to 2 or more persons in any one given accident.
3. $25,000 for the destruction of property.

If you fail to maintain your SR22 Coverage you could have your vehicle registration suspended, you may have to return your vehicle's license plates, and pay a reinstatement fee of $200. Additionally, you could incur a penalty of $5 per day for each day your vehicle was uninsured or you hadn't turned in your license plates. The maximum penalty per vehicle is $400.

What Types of South Carolina SR22's are Available?

There are basically 2 categories to choose from; Non-Owner SR22 and Owner SR22.

Non-Owner South Carolina SR22

If you don't own a vehicle, but still want your driver's license reinstated so you can operate vehicles you don't own, you'll want a Non-Owner South Carolina SR22. This option is by far the cheapest option since there's no liability to the insurance company to cover an automobile.

Owner SR22

If you do own a vehicle,  you need to include your vehicle coverage with your SR22 Responsibility Filing. While this is far more expensive than a Non-Owner SR22, it will be required in order to have your driver's license reinstated.

Driver's License Reinstatement Requirements

In order to have your driver's license reinstated, you must do two things:

1. Pay any required reinstatement fees imposed by the DMV. You can find out what you owe by visiting the South Carolina DMV's website.
2. Obtain and maintain a valid South Carolina SR22 Financial Responsibility. The SR22 must be filed with the DMV, which most insurance companies will do for you electronically.
